The London Baptist Association is deeply saddened that John Grant has today been convicted ofserious sexual offences committed over many years. The court has found that he abused positions of trust and influence over many years. We unreservedly condemn his actions and stand alongside those whose lives have been profoundly affected by them.
Our thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with those who have suffered abuse. We recognise the immense courage it takes for victim-survivors to come forward, particularly when offences occurred many years ago and involve someone who held positions of trust and influence within our churches.
Mr Grant was a prominent and influential figure in the life of the London Baptist Association for many years. He served in a number of voluntary leadership roles, including as a Trustee and Moderator of our charity, and preached widely across our family of churches. Today's conviction has brought profound sadness across our Association.
This case is a sobering reminder that positions of authority within our churches can be misused. It reinforces the importance of robust safeguarding, healthy accountability, and ensuring that our churches are places where people are safe, where concerns are heard, and where action is taken.
Since receiving the first safeguarding referral in September 2023, the London Baptist Association has worked closely with a victim-survivor, Muswell Hill Baptist Church, the Baptist Union of Great Britain, and the Metropolitan Police. Our Regional Safeguarding Lead supported the initial report to police, maintained contact throughout the investigation, and provided a formal witness statement. Throughout, our priority has been to support victim-survivors, cooperate fully with the police investigation, and help the church respond with care, integrity, and transparency.
We encourage anyone who may have been affected by Mr Grant's actions, or anyone with information that may assist the Metropolitan Police's investigation, to come forward. We recognise that this can be an incredibly difficult step, and we commend the courage of those who have already done so.
The London Baptist Association will continue to cooperate fully with the Metropolitan Police should any further assistance be requested. We will also reflect carefully on this case and remain committed to learning any lessons that will strengthen safeguarding across our Association and support our churches in maintaining the highest possible standards of safeguarding.
We ask our churches to pray especially for those who have been harmed, for all who are affected by today's news, and for truth, justice, and healing in the days ahead. Above all, we remain committed to ensuring that our churches are places where people are safe, where concerns are heard, and where abuse is never ignored.
