Greetings from Rev. Phil Barnard, Regional Minister Team Leader

It’s my first week in my new role as Team Leader of the LBA and I thought it would be good to say a few words of greeting in our weekly email.  I sit here in the office at Bloomsbury Cental Baptist Church taking in a very different setting to that which I am used to.  A few weeks ago, we had a fantastic and moving farewell at Mitcham Lane Baptist Church.  As a family, we miss them everyday.  But we know that the Lord has led me to this new role and ministry amongst the churches of the capital.

I consider it a great privilege and honour to be appointed as Team Leader and I am very much looking forward to getting to know you over the coming months and years.  Given the sheer size of the Association it might take me a while to navigate every corner (!) but it’s something I am excited about.  London is an amazing place and it sets the agenda of cultural and societal change for the rest of the country.  As churches, we face these opportunities and challenges head on.  Thus I am also looking forward to hearing your stories and sharing them with our Baptist family across the UK.

Throughout my ministry, I have always had the words Ephesians 4:11-13 ever before me:

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Despite my move into a trans-local context, that call to ‘equip God’s people’ remains true and strong.  I – along with the rest of the LBA team – are here to serve you so that the local church may be ‘built up’ towards unity and maturity.  I have a desire that the LBA becomes stronger in purpose and unity as we face the challenges of ‘being church’ in our post-Christian, multi-faith, secular society.

I would very much value your prayers as I acclimatise to my new surroundings – and also for my family as we experience big changes.  The BU provide our housing and we are trying to secure a property in Tooting not far from where we currently live.  The offer has been accepted, it’s vacant and there no chain – so your prayers for a smooth transaction would be appreciated.  Living in Tooting – a place we know and love – will mean the kids can stay in their respective schools and retain existing friendships.

Until I get settled into a routine, most days you’ll find me at the office in Bloomsbury.  You can reach me there or on my work mobile – 07885 147111 – or on email phil.barnard@londonbaptist.org.uk.  My day off will usually be Mondays when I’ll be looking after my three year old, Ernest.

I hope to be able to greet some of you at my induction at City Temple on 2nd July.

Yours, in Christ,

Rev. Phil Barnard

Regional Minister, Team Leader
